I am American, born in El Paso, TX--military dad.
Raised in MI and CA.
My grandparents were Irish, German, Hungarian &
Czechoslovakian (from late 1800s). I am named for
the Virgin Mary (tradition in Catholic families
for first girl name) and for my paternal
grandmother.
I didn't like my name when I was younger; I have 4
sisters with much better names. Many of my friends
from grade school were named Mary, but always with
attachments: Mary Jo, Mary Anne, Mary something.
Not me. Just Mary. Largely a forgettable name.
Boring as my sisters have said.
I like Mary, though, as it's simple and sweet.
