From what I've been told by a trustworthy scholarly individual, Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind, was the inventor of the name, Rhett. Also worth noting: the same source also cites Mitchell with the genesis of Scarlet as a name. Perhaps the color red is the theme for these inventions.
